Thought Process
For my first feature I decided to write a review of the film Buried. I enjoy writing film reviews (as cinema is a passion of mine) and I look at film as a diverse and inspiring medium. Before going to see Buried, which stars Ryan Reynolds as kidnapped and buried-alive truck driver Paul Conroy, I was immediately struck by the brief and intense trailer shown on TV. After I left the cinema the intensity of the film stayed with me for hours. I’m not a claustrophobic person, but after an experience like that, leaving the cinema and taking a breath of air was one of the most reliving experiences of my life! I knew I had a lot to say about this film, so I went home to research its history and devices, as well as gather opinions from both critics and cast.

Target Publication
The target publication for this film review would be either Total Film magazine or Empire Magazine. The reason being that these publications both offer insightful and detailed reviews that go further than just outlining the premise and giving a rating. The feature reviews for these magazines give an informative critique, before providing a justified viewpoint on the effectiveness of the film in general. I hope to emulate this as best I can, and offer more than a simple round-up even with a tight word count.
Structure
Structure is vitally important in forming an informative and engaging review. From looking at features in Empire and Total Film, I can see that their larger reviews cover certain bases such as technical aspects, main actors performances and the directors view of the filming process. I have decided to structure my review like this:
Intro
Short Synopsis
Initial reaction to the most important aspect of the film
The directorial successes/failures
Quote from Director
Ryan Reynolds performance
Quote from Ryan Reynolds
Technical production
Summary and Kick
Verdict
Quotes
Quote from Rodrigo Cortes (director)
I thought it might be useful and informative to have a quote from Cortes about his experience directing the film. I searched the Internet for an interview that might give a few clear and precise quotes to work with, something that might sum up how he feels about his project without taking up too much space in the feature.
Toronto International Film Festival - September 19th 2010:
"It was really difficult. The first thing I did was to not use too much logic, because if I used logic, I would have worked out very early on that making this film was impossible. Instead I made it then by the time I realised it was impossible, it was too late!"
Cortez on Reynolds:
"For [Ryan] it was very difficult, in physical terms, because he had to lay back with his back bleeding, his fingers literally fried from the heat of the lighter, his skin totally destroyed. But also in emotional terms, because he was a catalogue of extreme emotions, from primal fear, to panic, to hope, anger, surrender, acceptance, you name it!"
Quote from Ryan Reynolds
Surprisingly, it wasn’t that easy to get a first-hand quote from Ryan Reynolds, so I found some online interviews that gave a few informative gems regarding his experience during the making of the film.
Harry Smith - CBS News.com
"I think I spoke maybe 10 words socially, throughout the whole shoot. The shooting process was not unlike most dental surgeries - if the dentist used only hammers!"
Toronto International Film Festival - September 19th 2010:
"people love a thrill-ride! They love to be put in a situation where they can think: "what would I do?""
"For me, the movie is hard to watch. But the whole filming process of Buried was like a fever-dream. I see things in the movie that I don't recall doing at all!"
"All of that anxiety and all of that panic that you are immersed in each day made it really tough."
